Default Re: The Official 2010 Targa Canada West Thread

Hi Guys and Girls,

I have some bad news and some good.

I will start with the bad.

Targa West Canada 2010 was postponed until 2011 by the promoters late last year, something to do with no approval for the event. Mike and I decided at the time we would aim for the 2011 event. A couple of months later, Targa West Canada 2011 was cancelled by the promoters, something to do with insurance I think….. I cannot remember now.

This was a huge let down for both Mike and I, the amount of organising, logistics and sponsorship I had arranged was now fruitless.

Early this year, I considered the option of carrying the project on myself and competing in Targa Newfoundland later this year.
I come from a successful motor racing family in NZ and to compete in Targa has for the last couple of years been high on my list wether it is in Canada or closure to my original home, New Zealand/Australia where the logistics would have been a lot easier for me.
Before Mike and I teamed up, I was in the process of preparing a 1988 BMW E30 M3 to compete in Targa West Australia. With the announcement of Targa West Canada being a new event for 2010, almost overnight, Mike and I decided we would team up and run a vehicle in Canada together. Because it was a golden opportunity to help promote IVOAC and the awareness of RHD vehicles in Canada, the LHD M3 was sold and replaced with a RHD RX7.
However, earlier this year, I decided that I would not compete in Targa Newfoundland, I do not feel it would benefit IVOAC all that much……unless we crash and get on TV. The logistics of it being way over the other side of Canada is rather a nightmare as well. BC area was a lot easier due to the local support we would of received, prior, during and after the event.

So, I will now go back to my original plan including the type of car and hopefully soon attend some Targa's in Australia and New Zealand.

If Targa Canada West ever happens in the future, I am sure Mike and I will be back……. so watch this space.

Mike and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the companies who agreed to sponsor us and I must say, they were all very generous as well.

Zen Autoworks - Canadian Import Broker.
Payline and Ken - For your online bank transfers. Ken is a member of the forum - inokiyo
Courtney Agencies - For your customs clearance solutions (also cleared and unpacked the Targa camper for free).
Brave & Carvek - I have a partner in Carvek so I better thank him.

I would also personally like to thank the members of this forum who offered help, support and well wishes via email, you all were great and I will always remember this.
Besides the event, I was also looking forward to meeting many of you in person and hopefully this will happen sooner than later.

Now for the good news..

I now have a wild RX7 available.

Thank you for posting this update Mark. I too would like to thank those who did so much to support this project. It is one of those things that would have benefited IVOAC greatly had the Targa West not been canceled. The fact that it didn't happen was clearly beyond the control of anyone involved from the IVOAC team and supporters. That and the time and money lost must of been very frustrating. All your efforts were and are appreciated.

John
