Well, here's the secret! IVOAC plans to challenge the Targa Newfoundland race in September 2008 www.targanewfoundland.com
What's more, we are not only challenging the Targa Newfoundland, which is a 2,200KM rally style race on the roads of Newfoundland in the targa class, we're just crazy enough to drive our race car there and back from Vancouver - over 5,000KM each way!!! It's time to prove to the public that imported vehicles are a force to be reckoned with!!! Do you know anybody else fool enough to trust a 15 year old fully street legal race car to drive them to the opposite coast of North America, run a greuling race and then get them back again? This is intended as a major public relations event for IVOAC to grab the public's attention - Targa is very pleased to have us, and the media is already showing a lot of interest at this early stage! The race car is my own personal 1989 R32 Skyline GT-R and will in fact remain my personal daily driver through as much of the build up as possible too (we're doing this on a shoestring, and I think the car can take it!). The car currently sports a 1996 R33 V Spec RB26DETT motor and Brembo brakes, with R32 Nismo turbos and an assortment of other minor bolt ons. With the addition of fuel injectors and a tune, it can make well over 500 horsepower on pump gas - perhaps as much as 600HP if we get it all right while still maintaining driveability and fuel economy! We have contacted several potential major sponsors, but we can't count on anybody outside our community - anybody that thinks they know a good sponsor, let them know about the project! We will beg, borrow, or barter for anything that can help this project along - we are on a shoestring, and used parts are just fine, as long as they work (or can be fixed). Once again, this event is to raise the profile of our group and thrust us into the public spotlight! The drive out will have scheduled events at every stop to truly bring us together all the way across the country. Together, we can make this some thing great for imports in general, any and all help is needed and much appreciated! Okay guys, time to write the first cheque on this project for 50% of our race entry fee which is $3,104.68 including tax (total race entry cost is $6,209.35 with tax). Anybody that wants to make a personal donation in support of this project, you can send donations to targa@ivoac.ca via paypal, flag your donations as IVOAC Targa Project (don't worry, I don't sell cars, it was a one time venture that ended a couple of years ago, I still use the email though). Any businesses wanting to provide sponsorship, please PM me and we'll work something out. Here are a couple of pictures of the car - the air filters and strut tower bar were stolen and haven't been replaced yet....... ![]()

We do now have a very generous first sponsor for the project, more details to come when we get a page up!
Once again, we need a co-driver and a Vancouver area shop that wants to be involved would be useful too, otherwise I'll just turn the wrenches myself in the corner of my yard at work. We need a support crew to travel to the race as well as there will be a pile of spare stuff going with us.

I can't wait to see the progress on this.
My goal with my Skyline has been to race in the Targa rally (one day). So I guess I'll be watching this thread and possibly picking your brain in the future. |

This project is rolling right along! We still need all the above listed stuff, but does anyone have a good apint and body contact in the Vancouver area (that wants to either sponsor and/or give us a good deal)? We want to get the car painted and decaled plus the roll cage done pretty soon, as once it looks like a race car, it should be more appealing to the sponsors!

I have a friend in Armstrong who I would recommend for caging, but ... that's Armstrong.
A buddy of mine is planning on entering a spec-Miata in the 2009 Targa Newfoundland. Always wanted to run that event myself, but the logistics combined with extreme entrance fee has always just made it a "someday dream" for me. I've been road racing off and on since like 2000 at Mission .. but have only been running solo1 stuff for the last couple of years (like Knox Mountain Hillclimb). Do you race another vehicle ?? maybe I know you. hehe

Mike, as much I hate to do it, you may want to talk to Martin on GTRC. He had that guy doing $1000 paint jobs out of his back yard. I would bet he would be willing to sponser you if he got a sticker spot on the car. (the paint guy, not martin)
Otherwise PM Ben. I know he is getting a pretty good deal on paint from a guy in vancouver area.
